During the process of development, we get much too used to minor problems with the interface and other things, which as a result are left unattended. Expositions are the best way to deal with it, as they show things the way they really are.
Many people had a chance to test the game and express their opinion on game conventions. We gather information on what is convenient and inconvenient in the game, which features players use and which ones they don’t pay attention to.
For example, many players want each flag to have a minimum of 100 coins by default. However, in the early demo, you could only set an empty flag and then post money. As a result, many players who had not played Majesty 1 would set empty flags and wait for heroes to come running to execute their royal will. By the way, a building’s interface allows you to set defaults for different types of flags, but they are empty (zero coins) at the start of the game.
Another frequent complaint was about the proportions of heroes as compared to the houses. After players would zoom out with the camera, the houses looked normal, but the heroes became indistinct “aggressive pixels” – no upgrades, armor or weapons were visible. As a result, we decided to change the proportions of heroes and buildings.
P.S.
When we finished an early version of the weapon system, our programmers decided to play a joke and changed a rat’s characteristics to that of a powerful bow. Then they put this rat into an archer’s inventory and started the game. The archer, without any trace of doubt, took the rat out of their pocket and began to shoot arrow after arrow out of it. This was rather unexpected and funny. But what happened afterwards was a surprise even for us. When evil monsters killed the archer, the rat-bow fell to the ground, sprang back to life and ran away to attend its rat’s business. Another archer, who happened to go by, saw this rat, compared its characteristics to his bow, understood that his bow was worse, and started chasing the rat! Soon, he managed to catch it. Cheerfully, he went to seek monsters for a little hunt.
