So last week I showed you some pretty screenshots of our new direct shadow technology in Overgrowth. I also made a bold claim about how our shadow system has been designed to update rapidly so that modders can instantly see how lighting will affect their level as they build it. This week I'd like to to show you first hand what I mean. Below is a realtime demonstration of what David's shadow updating looks like. To see it in HD click here.
The whale man you observed is a fan made model but David used it to demonstrate how the objects self shadow in real time. You can see that the whale's tail seamlessly casts a shadow on his back and then onto the terrain as he gets rotated. David has since added ambient occlusion technology which adds a final level of realism to scenes. However, I will save our new ambient occlusion system for a future post.
