I'm starting to wonder about this current console generation... or, more importantly, whether I'm starting to change a little bit. See... although I have a Wii (which I enjoy), it just doesn't get much playing time. In fact, I've been steadily building my PS2 game collection in recent weeks and have even started playing some games on my PSone (just played a bit of Chrono Cross this morning).
Back in 2006, I actually had an Xbox 360 for a short time. It was fun for awhile, but there was really nothing that tickled my fancy, aside from XBLA games. Once I had moved to a different location from where I had been living, I was actually forced to give up the 360 because it sapped the house's power supply. Seriously. I had been forced back to the last generation.
The Wii has had its moments with me. Super Mario Galaxy was an incredible game. I still pop in Wii Sports every now and again to see how my bowling skills have come along. I've bought 64 Virtual Console games to date. The problem is that there hasn't been that consistent stream of software that's kept me interested for extended periods of time.
My playing time with the Wii fluctuates, while my time with the PS2 has been steadily increasing. I just got Persona 3 recently and found it to be fantastic. Since there are no hockey games made for the Wii, and I am a hockey fan, I've been playing these on the PS2. (If you haven't played NHL Hitz Pro, which you can find for as little as $5 used, you're missing out.)
I have some interest in the Xbox 360 (again) and the PS3, but the price for both consoles in prohibitive for me, based on how much money I make. If the rumors become truth about either console dropping to $300 (Xbox 360 Tard Pack... err... Arcade SKU notwithstanding), then I may reconsider. Still, I need a catalyst. New games lately haven't piqued my interest. I'm a Burnout fan, but Burnout Paradise doesn't do much for me. I have almost every Ace Combat game ever made, but Ace Combat 6 wasn't enough to make me drop the dough on a new console.
I'm just thinking out loud, but I do wonder. I mean, for the price of a new console now, I can buy, what... 6 new Wii games? Maybe 8 or 9 new PS2 games or more? If I'm still getting good value from my PS2, why upgrade?
I just don't know right now. It's up to Sony and Microsoft to convince me... and with a recession looming, that could be even more difficult.
