Space Falcon Commander is a throw back to the golden days of arcade gaming. If we were cooking we might say that SFC has one pound of Galaga, a cup of Galaxian, two tablespoons of Space Invaders and a dash of Asteroids.
But taking these games and mixing them together could result in an inedible mess or a culinary masterpiece. So let’s look at the ingredients.
The graphics on SFC, while being better than the collective ingredients mentioned in the opening paragraph are not what one would call outstanding. In fact, in comparison to a lot of what is being seen done on mobile phones lately they are sub-standard. However given the nature of the genre and the expectations of the platform they are not bad. They are suitable to the vertical scroller but could have been better.
The sound on the other hand is utterly ridiculous. If you choose to turn on the music when the game loads it will in fact play music, until you enter the game. Once you are in the game there is simply no sound whatsoever. Yes, you read that correctly. There is no sound at all. No shooting, missile firing, laser gunning, ship exploding audio element. There is no Galaga-like alien ship flight sound, there is no Space Invader-like sound to increase suspense and no Asteroids-like ’pew pew’ gun sound. It’s a completely missing facet of the game which really drags it down.
