The first Call of Duty, developed by Infinity Ward, gained notoriety among gamers and critics alike for its numerous innovation in FPS. The Kill-Cam was something never before seen in a game, and its take on World War II would make Call of Duty a household name. Call of Duty 2, also developed by Infinity Ward, took it even further by adding next-gen graphics to the already solid experience. CoD 2 garnered many perfect scores, but didn’t innovate the genre the way the first one did. Then the third Call of Duty, developed by
Treyarch, was a huge flop critically. The game didn’t do much outside of context sensitive boss battles to help breathe life into the franchise. Then came Call of Duty 4 developed by Infinity Ward. Call of Duty 4 evolved the franchise in almost every way. Its graphically astounding engine and innovations in multiplayer won it many coveted Game of the Year titles. Since the announcement of Call of Duty 5, people have been clamoring there is no way Treyarch can even begin to replicate the success of Call of Duty 4. We here at Gamers Daily News got our hands on one of the beta keys, and are more than happy to inform you about whether these people are right are wrong.
Let me first say, however, the game is still in beta for a reason. I did come across a few glitches in my time with the game, but nothing I’m sure Treyarch won’t have cleaned up by the time of release. For the sake of this preview I will not include any of the glitches I found in the Beta, and I will instead focus only of the quality of the overall game. With that said…
The Call of Duty 5: World at War multiplayer beta allowed us to sample five game modes, three new maps, and some of the upcoming perks from the upcoming game. The five game modes included in the beta were War, Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch without parties, and Free-For-All. Anyone who has played any FPS, let alone any of the Call of Duty games, will recognize all of these modes, except for War which is just practically another name for King of the Hill. It looks like Call of Duty 5: World at War will follow CoD 4 in the sense that there really is a mode for everybody. Players with a lone-wolf playing style will find their comfort zone in Free-For-All, whereas players that enjoy a team dynamic will fall in love with Capture the Flag.
