Elementz, from Goobox and kobojo, is another in the long line of match-three games for every platform imaginable. This one does manage to set itself slightly apart from the others but not very far.
In the game you need to obviously match three of the same colored orbs together to clear them and score points. On top of that if you match four it makes a super-charged orb that when then in a matched set triggers an elemental power that clears even more orbs. Finally if you match up five or more it automatically triggers that elemental power and clears some orbs.
I have seen a chain reaction clear away half the screen, and yet, the game is still challenging. There are two modes to play Blitz and Endurance. Blitz simply gives you five minutes to score as much as you can. Endurance gives you a countdown timer. As long as you continually make new matches the countdown will be stalled or refilled. Filling it completely moves you on to the next points level which also means that it gets harder and harder to keep going as it drains
out faster.
There’s also a tutorial mode which doesn’t keep score and is like an unlimited mode to learn the game. It would be nice if they could have added another mode or two to the game to give it even more replay value, but as is, it’s a nice little casual title.
This game has certainly proved interesting. The visual styling is good and the sounds aren’t so bad. The elemental powers each have their own look and effect on the game board and that adds some variation to the stock match-three gameplay. It’s challenging enough that a friend and I have gone back and forth at the top of the high score table which gives it some nice replay value. But it does suck the battery dry fairly quick so have a charging cable nearby just in case.
