Underground is
a side-scrolling shooter wrapped up in a story and placed in the universe of graffiti, underground trains and the culture surrounding all of that.
The gameplay is like R-Type if it weren’t cool like R-type is. I’m not saying it’s not cool, it’s just not cool like R-Type is cool. Overall the game didn’t really keep my attention. Yes there’s some attempt at a story but then the gameplay is totally removed from that.
The story revolves around a guy on an underground train going somewhere, seeing strange things, etc. Then the gameplay is an animated graffiti-styled 2D scrolling shooter. There’s an almost complete disconnect between the two and really they could have done away with the
story as the gameplay has nothing to do with it and does not further it.
The controls can be toggled between touch and tilt which is nice because you can’t always be in a position to use the accelerometer based controls. They’re fairly simple as the ship moves at a fairly steady pace and fires automatically.
There are some weird quirks in the game. For example, your shots and the enemies can move through the graffiti, but your ship alone cannot. Normally in a game like this no shots or ships go through. So it seems a little biased on the side of the computer enemies.
Overall the sound and the sights of this game are cool. The story is completely pointless when you look at the game from the point of the gameplay which is a 2D side-scrolling shooter. As a 2D side-scrolling shooter, it’s not so bad, but hase some strange quirks.
