Horror Racing from Chillingo and NewFX Games is a touch-based battle-style racing title. You have a variety of racers to choose from each with their own armor and speed rating from the beginning. As you go you can purchase upgrades to those items as well as your weapons which allow you to carry more and more. The view is top down instead of 3D first-person which allows you to see the track and your opponents quite well.

There are multiple difficulty rating (easy, normal, hard). There are also three modes - Championship, Skirmish and Quick Race. The Championship lets you play a career-like mode. The difference between Skirmish and Quick Race is that in Skirmish you can set the parameters and choose your car etc. In Quick race it’s just click and go.

There are also three stages to work through. You must win the first stage to open the second and have gold medals in the first and second to open the third. That then allows you to choose those tracks for the Skirmish mode. Each stage has five tracks for 15 tracks total to race through.

While racing there are various power ups and buffs in the road that will come in handy including machine gun ammo, mines, rockets, and health. There are also runes that give you special powers Red & Hot gives you ramming capabilities, Dark Energy gives you a lightning bolt attack and Quad damage, well, is self-explanatory. There are also boost platforms, health and more.

The game is fairly robust for an iPhone title. The controls are a steering wheel that acts as both acceleration and steering (brilliant move) and on the other side there are some firing controls for the weapons. Steering can be frantic at times but overall it works quite well.

The racing is fun and easy enough to control for the most part. The shop, which allows you to upgrade engine, weapons and armor, is somewhat useless as they limit when you can buy things and what you can buy instead of just allowing you to do it when you have the cash. Currently I have $6500 in my account and am unable to buy anything.

Overall the game is a good racing title for the iPhone. The combination of play modes, tracks and difficulties makes for a satisfying gaming experience. The racing is fast and furious and the weapons will save you from time to time.
