Interview with Michal Lodzki CEO of XTR 3D

Posted by Christophor Rick, 209 days ago

No mouse, no keyboard gaming...so how does it work?

XTR 3D human Machine Interface (3D HMI), allows users to operate computers, play games and interact in virtual worlds using natural human hand and body motions. XTR developed software-based full body 3D motion capture technology, using a single standard web-cam. XTR software has a universal interface that can seamlessly integrate without modifications into existing applications, and may be ported to any embedded platform/ gaming console.

There have been other games that have utilized cameras as the main interface (notably on the PS3) and there were always problems with lighting, is this going to be a problem with XTR as well?

XTR 3D HMI robustness is well demonstrated in its ability to function under extreme lighting and environment conditions. From poor indoor lighting conditions to outdoor with sunlight and a moving camera. At the end of the day, the interface needs to work in order to be "transparent" to the user.

All of the videos show fairly slow movements and seem to have some lag time. This has been the problem of the interface in the past, how is XTR working to speed this up?

XTR is running in real time in more than 400 frames per second. XTR is limited only by the camera frame per second. XTR’s robustness and accuracy are equal or superior to costly hardware based solutions and offer a real life interface resulting in an improved user experience. XTR’s full body motion capture is light weight, and does not require any alteration to computerized equipment.

Some of the videos show applications that don’t really seem to have a practical use, like the Nasa World Wind demo. What practical uses is the technology being applied to currently?

XTR 3D HMI is currently under joint development for next generation games who will use XTR 3D HMI as their interface. It will also integrate in the next generation of games that will include a very active participant from the end user including virtual worlds and virtual remote.

As we say: you can use XTR as a "Wii without the Wii or as a touch screen without a touch" just "XTR" it.

in regards to games, what kind of games will be best suited to the technology?

Wii like games, fitness, sport, virtual mouse navigation (minority report) and much more.

I understand there are some fitness possibilities for the software, could you elaborate on those for us?

All games publishers and developers including console manufacturers are seeking for fitness games including all kinds of exercises e.g.: yoga, dancing, and more, this is a combination of games and health that is very appealing. XTR capabilities are a perfect solution to this target and already working in this field but we can’t elaborate more yet. .

Thanks go out to Michal and we wish XTR all the best. Hopefully I can get in and see a live-action demo of it in the near future
